Believe it or not, speaking English is your biggest asset. If you speak some Spanish you may find it easier to start a conversation, but so many people in Mexico are learning English and want to practice with you. It is actually quite easy to meet locals. The old fashion way of talking to people, or with the way the world works these days, use the internet!

It seems like most people grew up from here and if you are not from here they don't accept you. Also, what do people do?

There isn't a lot of organizations or activities where people can meet others. It seems that if you don't have kids playing sports or are in the bar scene, it is difficult to make friends. I don't have kids and I don't drink.

It seems like everyone has been here their whole life and already has their group of people they hang around with. I am a really outgoing friendly person and like to meet people. I am from Northern New Mexico and it was not like that at all.

Here is where and how to meet people in albuquerque and make new friends

Everyone was so active and outside. There were many organizations to and it was easy to meet people.

Here you never see anyone in their neighborhoods walking or doing anything. Originally Posted by df I consider myself nerdy because I am more of the non-sports type. Now, I am not against occasionally listening to others discuss their favorite sports team stats or whatever.

I enjoy being around people and listening to what they enjoy speaking about but sports is not my focus. Going to a game every weekend would bore me to death.

I love music. I can't play an instrument. God did not bless me with that talent but I love to attend concerts. You are right. It is hard to get started in a small town. However, it seems harder in Hobbs for some reason.

I guess it is because they don't have a lot of organizations to get involved with. Its funny because Hobbs is larger than some of the towns I have lived in but it does not have as many service-type organizations or volunteer organizations. I checked into volunteering. Guess they don't focus on it as much. You sound like me. I was thinking of moving there because it's not a long drive from where I am now, COL is low, they have low-cost community college I want to learn programming and med.

What was the attraction with you? You could always attend church, if that's your thing. I couldn't. IIRC, there is a nice yoga community there, too. My guess is that anyone attending jr. Maybe even with the faculty. Hope this helps; I'd hang out at a coffee shop, take classes and do yoga, if I wanted to make friends.

Last edited by KaraZetterberg; at PM. Suzuki trained teachers will not buy this, sorry to say. Anyone can learn music, regardless of age, disability, intelligence, whatever. And that goes for adults, too. I couldn't resist. I moved here because of my spouse's employment. Don't believe I want to take anymore college classes at this point in my life since I have a college degree.

However, I do like the idea of coffee and breakfast. Maybe just look for some cool hangouts. The question is do the same people go to those places so that you can get to know people or is it a different group on any given day? IHOP is hit or miss. More tourist. Kara, you said you volunteer at a nursing home.

Are there other ways to volunteer besides play an instrument? The community college idea listed above is sound as a pound. My reasoning is that at college one tends to feel like supporting the other student because you're all in the "same boat" so to speak. Support will eventually come naturally. Going to college is a good idea. It is just that I already have a Masters Degree.

However, I do check their schedule every once in a while and if they offered a class, I wanted to learn, I would definitely take a class.
